Channa (tribe)

Channa [ Sindhi: چنا ] is the name of a Sindhi clan in Sindh, Pakistan. The book The Chachnamah, An Ancient History of Sind mentioned that Channa was the first Sindhi tribe to become Muslim. They were very rich and wealthy, so Muhammad bin Qasim gave them the title of "Marzuq". As Muhammad bin Kasim reached the town of Ishbha (near present-day Kotri) in the year 93 Muharram (672 AD), he saw a group of people praying there.Kasim asked the local people who they were; the locals replied, "Changa Mahroo", which means "good people". (In Sindhi, changa means "good" and mahroo means "people".) From this word, changa, evolved the name Channa.

The Channa can now be found in all districts of Sindh province and are engaged in art, literature, politics, agriculture, civil service, defence forces, engineering, medicine and business.
